Don’t Fall Into This Trap. One Of The Biggest Mistakes Coaches Make

Don’t fall into this trap. One of the biggest mistakes coaches make is…

One coach who recently spoke to us on the phone said:

There’s so much information out there. It’s easy to find what you need. But it’s just so difficult knowing how to actually implement it in the real world

One of the biggest challenges coaches have is the implementation of the information they have.

It’s so easy to go to YouTube and get overwhelmed.

It’s so easy to get swept up into the latest trends and tactics because you see everyone else doing it.

And also it’s so easy to stick to what you already know.

But it’s not so easy adopting a new strategy. And especially feeling confident to keep at it when you see nobody else doing it.

And this is one of the biggest traps coaches fall into to.

Here’s the thing:

If you want a team culture like everyone else’s, you do what everyone else does.

If you want a team of winners, you have to take a risk and try new things.

You’ve got to accept you’re going to make mistakes along the way as you grow as a coach.

You’ve got to be willing to invest your time into continuous development as a coach.

Not only that, but you’ve got to be prepared to invest your own money into getting mentored by someone you feel can help you get to where you want to go.

In my experience, building a winning team all starts with your philosophy.

If you’ve been reading my emails for a while, you’ve probably got a few strategies on how to do this.

And I get emails from coaches who have implemented these strategies and have had a lot of success.

For example:

When you implement these lessons with your team, you’ll start to notice subtle changes.

Like players are more engaged, more attentive and enjoy their time with you.

But you’ve got to be patient.

Because building and organizing your basketball philosophy where everybody – including parents, staff, parents and even people in your community – buys in takes time.

Realistically…

It can take weeks to get your foundations, non-negotiables and your plan of execution figured out.

It can take months to start laying your foundation, getting a stronger buy in and building a winning program.

It can take years for everyone to buy in.

Remember:

It often takes 10 years to become “an overnight success”

BUT…

The key is to move one step closer each day.

Laying one brick at a time.

The Great Wall of China, for example, took over 200 years to build. But 2000 years later it’s still standing and is one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

You got to have the mindset of getting better each day.

Trying new things.

Refining strategies.

Building on what works, and removing what doesn’t.

How can you do this?

Take notes of the lessons in the emails.

Think about how you can apply them with your unique team.

Consider how each of your individual players will react to the lesson.

Take into account all the small things nobody else is even thinking about.

Try to incorporate the lessons you feel will work with your team into your next workout.

Sometimes they’ll work with your unique athletes and team.

Sometimes they won’t.

But, don’t fall into this trap. One of the biggest mistakes coaches make is…

Wrongly assuming they can successfully implement everything with their team.

Like trying to teach advanced shooting techniques they saw on YouTube to a kid who can’t even get 3 consecutive layups.

Or using some of the mental and emotional strategies without first nurturing the player to make them more receptive.

And blaming their team or the information when it doesn’t work.

Instead, it’s much better to first focus on getting an organized philosophy based on proven principles so everyone buys in and you instinctively know what will and won’t work.

Keep Getting After It
