Dee Brown

Biography:

Dee Brown enters his first season as an assistant coach with the Pistons after serving the last two years as Head Coach and Director of Basketball Operations for the Springfield Armor in the NBA Development League.  Dee Brown comes to the NBA D-League with a wealth of experience in several facets of the game of basketball.  After attending Jacksonville University in his home town, Brown played in 476 games as a member of the Boston Celtics after they selected him 19th overall in the 1990 NBA Draft. Brown played in each of the Celtics’ 82 regular-season games during a spectacular rookie campaign that earned his selection to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1990-91. He averaged 8.7 points and 4.2 assists to help the Celtics win the NBA Atlantic Division with a 56-26 record that season. In 11 games during the 1991 playoffs, Brown averaged 12.2 points.

Perhaps the most defining feat for Brown during his tenure with the Celtics came during the 1991 All-Star Weekend in Charlotte. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound guard emerged the Slam Dunk champion, besting the 6- 10 Shawn Kemp in the finals with what has become an iconic “no-look” dunk. After pumping up his sneakers, Brown draped his right arm over his eyes in mid-air and slammed the ball with his left. In a 12-year NBA career that spanned 608 games and included stints with the Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic, Brown averaged 11.1 points and 3.7 assists per game. He led the NBA with 135 3-point field goals as a member of the Raptors in 1998-99.

Following his playing days, Brown delved into coaching with the WNBA’s Orlando Miracle in 2002. He guided the Miracle to a 16-16 campaign, which represented the team’s most successful season at the time. Brown also coached the San Antonio Silver Stars of the WNBA in 2004.  Between his WNBA coaching stops, Brown served as Director of Player Development for the Orlando Magic. In that capacity, Brown played a vital role in overseeing player programs and providing leadership support to the Magic players and to the organization as a whole. Brown rejoined the Magic in 2005 as Community Ambassador, which entailed community appearances and speaking engagements.

The winner of the ESPN show “Dream Job 3,” Brown was an analyst for a number of the network’s basketball shows. He also was the co-host on “Full Court Press,” a daily NBA talk show on Sirius Satellite Radio, and hosted the ESPN Original Entertainment show “City Slam.”  In addition to his responsibilities with the Armor, Brown will remain the president and CEO of EDGE Basketball, LLC. Branded as Florida’s premier basketball training facility, the EDGE (Elite Development Growth Environment) focuses on building fundamental basketball players for the future. Brown’s handson training approach has guided middle school, high school, college and professional athletes to the next level. Among the players Brown has trained at the EDGE includes NBA players Grant Hill, Drew Gooden and Chucky Atkins and WNBA players Tamika Catchings, Nykesha Sales and Katie Douglas and has worked with many of the top amateur players in the U.S. and around the world.

Every summer since 2007, Brown has been an elite skill development instructor at the Nike Girls Skills Academies around the county, the Lead Instructor and Director for several elite girls and boys’ basketball camps, the Director for the NBA Development League Fantasy Camps held in Las Vegas and at Hall of Fame Weekend in Springfield, MA and the Director for the NBA AMERICAS TEAM CAMP PRESENTED BY NIKE held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Brown resides in Atlanta, GA with his wife Tammy, daughters Alexis (15), Alyssa (13) and Alanni (8) and son Anakin (5). Tammy Brown is a native of Massachusetts who played women’s basketball for American International College in Springfield.
